How durable are pocket spring cushions?

Customer Question

What kind of foam is used in pocket spring sofas?

Most pocket spring sofas use 1.8 density polyurethane foam as the border around the fabric covered coil springs.

  • This is also, by far, the most common foam used for all-foam sofa cushions.

1.8 density foam sofa cushions often wear out and lose their resiliency, shape and comfort within 5 years or less.

When used with pocket springs, however, 1.8 density foam lasts far longer.

  • The bulk of the sitter’s weight will be on the springs rather than the foam.

A good quality pocket spring cushion (with a 1.8 density foam border) should last 10 - 15 years or more.
